Amarapura, located about 11 km from the
south of Mandalay, was an ancient capital of Konbaung
dynasty. U Bein Bridge, the world longest teak bridge 1209 m
long, built by U Bein last 200 years ago, can be seen on the
Taungthaman Lake. Mahargandayaune monastery, sheltering more
than 1000 monks, is a worth visiting place in Amarapura. The
most interesting part of this monastery is how the more than
1000 monks content in peace and silent even while they are
taking daily meals. The monks file past in silence in front
of the donors, taking the lid of their lacquer bowl to
receive a large dollop of rice. The monks file into the
dinning hall where they sit cross-legged; the curries and
vegetables have been placed on the table. When the meal is
finished each monk leaves the table taking his bowl with him
without making any sound. Anything that remains will be his
breakfast the following morning or for the ones in need. |
