Bagan is one of the world’s most beautiful archeological ensembles, listed UNESCO’s World Heritage, and one of the major symbols of the country. Once the capital of the legendary kingdom, Bagan concentrates more than 2000 stupas and temples dated back as early as the 9th century. They mark the time when Theravada Buddhism first flourished in the country and when the 1st Myanmar Empire reached the zenith of its power. Bagan’s ancient religious sites are also a symbol of times when Myanmar arts and architecture passed through a “golden age”. Thousands of travelers and pilgrims visit the city every year to admire its extraordinary beauty.

You will start your day with visits to Shwezigon pagoda, built as an important reliquary shrine whose architecture served a model to succeeding Myanmar stupas; majestic Thatbyinnyu temple, the tallest religious building in Bagan, Shwesandaw pagoda, one of the oldest, and Htilominlo pagoda famous for its colorful mural paintings. You will continue to the elegant Nagayon temple housing a Standing Buddha image under a hood in the form of a giant naga (serpent) and the unique Ananda temple, a masterpiece of Bagan architecture. Ananda temple houses four huge Standing Buddha images oriented strictly to the four cardinal points, its overall look combines features of traditional Indian and Mon styles. You will also make a stop at a bustling Nyaung Oo market and some local villages where you will learn about traditional cotton weaving, palm sugar making, peanut oil production, and traditional lacquerware.

In the afternoon you will continue to explore the mythical Bagan visiting, among others, the biggest Bagan’s temple Dhammayangyi, one of the oldest Manuha temple, other temples, stupas and monasteries. You will enjoy an enchanting sunset over the millennial city from one of the scenic spots.
